The Army wants vendors to provide lighter manpack radios with longer range. (Army)
The Army would like to decrease the weight of manpack radios it plans to buy, while simultaneously raising the requirements for transmission range. A request for information asks industry whether it can meet the proposed new parameters.
The RFI specifies a threshold weight of 12 pounds, with 8 pounds the objective. It also wants a 10-kilometer range, with 24 hours of battery life.
According to a Nextgov report, the prosed change came after a memo from MG H.R. McMaster, commander of the Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. The memo criticized manpack radios for doubling the weight of the current Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINGCARS) backpacks while having less than half the range.
Responses to the RFI are due Nov. 7.
